He probably wanted to see her dance…But wait, did he really mean that?
Today’s story is about a frightening and strange experience encountered by a girl who tried some psychic test, originally from Nobuhiko Otani.
Psychic Test Story (Japan Makes Me Scared Podcast)
Scary & Horror Story of the Kaidan (transcription)
Introduction
The original story is from Nobuhiko Otani. He is a member of a Japanese comedian duo, Dainoji, and sometimes tells Kaidan stories as well. This is what he heard from one of the younger comedians he worked with.
Goukon Party
As a young comedian, he was once into Goukon at the time. You know, Goukon is kind of a Japanese version of a blind date where an equal number of men and women go to a fancy restaurant or pub, get to know each other and find a future partner.
Once, a group of about five men and five girls was having a Goukon at an izakaya in Nagoya when they just happened to start telling scary Kaidan stories. Well, it might be surprising to you guys, but the Kaidan story is actually one of the common topics at a Goukon party, so there is nothing weird about that in Japan.
Anyway, at some point, one of the girls said, “Hey, I actually have a psychic sense”.
You know, they were just getting excited about the scary stories, but this confession made things even more exciting.
Then she continued, saying there was a test to see if you have a psychic sense.
Psychic Test
What kind of test is this? Maybe you can try it out as well.
First, close your eyes and picture the house you grew up in when you were a kid.
Imagine you are just outside the front door, unlock and open it, and go straight inside.
Then you try to open each window in the house one by one.
When you’ve finished opening them all, you close them all the same way, one by one.
Then you go back to the front door and bang. You close the door to go out of the house.
That’s it. It is super easy, isn’t it?
How did you feel? Or the question should be, what did you see in the house?
In the process of all the steps, did you see someone?
This can be anyone. You know, it can be your family, relatives, even your pets, or complete strangers.
If you pass by anyone, it means you are a psychic.
That kind of story came up in that Goukon party.
Meg’s try
Here’s where the main character of this story changes again. It’s the other woman who was in there.
Let’s call her Meg for convenience.
When Meg got back home from the Goukon and was about to sleep that night, she did this test casually.
She softly closed her eyes. “What did my parents house look like?”
She came to Nagoya from her distant hometown a few years ago but could still easily remember her parents’ house.
She entered the house. Then, open the windows and close them one by one.
And then, when she was about to leave…Just next to the stairs, around the corner, there was a little shadow.
Then, “pachin”.
That shadow came out suddenly and grabbed her legs.
When she looked at the shadow, it was a middle-aged man.
“Hiii”
She was just so scared that she couldn’t say anything but a little scream-like voice.
She was still thinking like “I’ve never seen him before…”
Then she realised the man was saying something.
“Otte, Otte”
His voice was muddled and difficult to hear, but it sounded like this.
At that moment, she could open her eyes and was still in her flat room.
“Was it just a dream? Or does it mean like I’m a psychic?”
One theory at the Funeral
While she was still in shock, her mobile phone suddenly rang.
“Who is calling me that late at night?”
When she looked at the display, it was from her mother.
When she answered the phone, her mother told her that one of her uncles had just passed away.
It was the uncle of a distant relative, so she hadn’t met him often, but one idea came to her intuitively.
“Isn’t this what they call a hunch?” She had a bad feeling about it.
A few days later, Meg went back to her parents’ house and attended the funeral.
As I said earlier, he was a distant relative, and she’d only met him a few times when she was little. She barely remembered him.
But when she saw his portrait there. It was that middle-aged man who grabbed her legs the other day.
Then she thought about what he said.
“Otte, Otte”
Probably that was… That was some kind of message from the uncle.
After the funeral, there was a small family gathering, and Meg talked about it with her mum.
Her mum was really surprised but didn’t deny that, like it was just a dream.
She told Meg about one theory.
“Do you remember the shoes you use for ballet?”
Meg used to play ballet when she was a little girl. The toe shoes she wore for ballet. They were very special shoes, and she liked them a lot.
Her mum continued, “Actually, these shoes were presents from the uncle.”
So possibly…that voice.
“Otte, Otte”
That could be “Odotte”, which means dance in Japanese.
He could have told Meg to dance. He probably wanted to see her dance with the shoes he had given her.
That’s the theory of what her mother thought.
Well, when Meg heard that, she thought, “Oh, I see. It made sense now.”
So she wasn’t scared anymore but felt a bit sad that she couldn’t finally dance in front of her uncle.
The funeral day was over, and then Meg came back to Nagoya again. She was living normally for a few days…
The second Encounter
One night, when she was about to go to sleep… Suddenly, she got into a kind of paralysis.
While she couldn’t move, her parents’ house appeared inside her head. Then, unconsciously, she opened the door and went straight inside.
“No, no, no, no!”
“If I go further, there’s the uncle in that corner.”
As Meg was thinking that, sure enough, the uncle came barging out.
Then, obviously, he grabbed her legs again.
And said, “Otte, Otte”
But, at that time, the difference was she wasn’t scared but pretty calm. You know, she already knew who he was and what he wanted at that time.
So she thought like, “If I explain calmly, I’m sure he will understand.”
She then started talking to him, saying, “Hey, uncle, I’m sorry, but I can’t dance anymore. You know, I’m not a ballet dancer anymore.”
“And you are actually…dead. So please, I hope you can go to heaven and rest there now.”
She spoke to him like that from her heart.
But even so, he didn’t stop at all.
“Otte, Otte”
His voice was getting even louder and louder.
She didn’t know what to do and was just listening to his voice.
“Wait….” She realised something.
He wasn’t saying “Odotte”; he wasn’t telling her to dance.
It was…
“Otte, Otte…Kawatte, Kawatte.”
He was saying “Kawatte”. And it means swap in Japanese.
You know what I mean? He was saying “Kawatte”, that means you die instead of me.
The moment she realised this, Meg lost consciousness again, this time out of fear for sure…
